The ERYO was founded in 1978 by the Department of Education.

This orchestra aims to introduce the public to orchestral music and to allow children to enjoy themselves while entertaining and educating others.

Pienaar Fourie, the conductor, has been with the orchestra since its inception.

Fourie said he is amazed of how far they’ve come with the orchestra.

“After the Department of Education withdrew their funds in 1994, we didn’t think we will make it to 40 years,” said Fourie.

“We managed to raise funds from concerts to keep us going and we’ve always had enough players in the orchestra.”

Fourie said education has played a major role within the orchestra, to build and nurture the youngsters’ interest and love for symphonic music.

“The orchestra supports 15 students by paying for their music lessons to enhance their musical talents,” he said.

Interact youth make a difference and get rewarded

“Throughout the years I’ve realised that our learners’ self-esteem gets boosted by being on stage and interacting with others while developing their musical skills in an orchestral environment,” said Fourie.

Fourie said many of their past members have gone to be professional musicians locally and internationally.
