Factory fire in Benoni South contained

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation

A fire that broke out at a recycling plant in Birmingham Street, Benoni South, earlier today has been contained, according to Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS).
Central Cluster duty officer Lt Col Naidoo of Actonville SAPS said they were patrolling the area and noticed huge billowing clouds of smoke in the Benoni South industrial area at around 3pm.

“Officers discovered the holding area of Benoni Metal Waste on fire,” reported Naidoo.
“There was smouldering plastic and huge flames in the factory and the unit called for the fire department.
“Four fire trucks were despatched to the area to battle the blaze.

“A problem experienced was that there was no fire hydrant and the fire truck had to leave to obtain water.

“At that stage damage to property was unknown and no injuries were reported,” said Naidoo.
No comment was received from DEMS at the time of publishing.
