Benoni, help Charista reach the finals by voting

Charista is one of 24 finalists who were selected from contestants across the country to make her mark in society.

Charista Coetzee (17) lives to personify the concept of beauty with brains.

The Hoërskool Hans Moore High School head girl, also the captain of the u-18 first netball team, just happens to be a semi-finalist for the Miss High School SA pageant this year.

The matriculant is also involved in various community outreach programmes.

These include volunteering her time to the upkeep of the animals of the Benoni SPCA and a project she named Walk in their Shoes.

Charista explained once at a netball match against an opposing school, one of the girls played barefoot because she could not afford sports shoes.

This sparked the idea to donate sports shoes to children at various levels of study in order for them to participate in sporting activities.

Her mother, Adele, said the initiative allows for children to do more instead of prohibiting them.

“We are looking to approach schools to create drop-off points at the schools itself so it’s of more convenience to parents and their children,” said Adele.

Another project Charista is currently engaged in is one she named the Princess Project.

“Farewells are the most looked forward to event for any matric learner with many farewells happening throughout the year,” said Charista.

“Unfortunately, not everyone can afford the extravagant day.

“That’s why I wanted to do something special for the girls who cannot afford to go to their farewell.

“We look for sponsors to help these young ladies live out their dreams for the day.

“This can be in the form of the dress, hair, make-up or even the car.

“They get to have a shopping experience and can choose their dress from a stand of choices with one of the local beauty salons doing their hair and make-up.”

Charista explained some of the key factors contestants are judged on include intelligence, being yourself, contributions to community and natural beauty (the latter being the one she supports 100 per cent).

“This is about the upliftment of the local community and contribution to make the community a better place,” said Charista.

“Every girl has the capability and the potential to play even bigger roles in society for their own upliftment and those around them.

Charista embraces the concept of natural beauty.

“You need to be yourself and stand firmly on what you believe in for you to succeed.”

To vote for the Benonian beauty to reach the finals, SMS GEES MHSSA CHARISTA to 37587.

SMSes charged at R5 each and voting closes on October 5.
