Pretoria Road contractors face possible penalty fee

Pretoria Road has a new deadline.

Penalties are at hand for contractors who have to complete the Pretoria Road project by October 12.

“If the project is not complete by the 12th, we will have to pay penalties,” said the contractor, who did not want to be named.

The delay was due to a misunderstanding between the contractor and the sub-contractor which resulted in labourers not working for about three weeks.

Residents and businesses have been affected the most during this time.

Landlord of the Rynfield Lifestyle Centre Sharon Smallwood said she has lost tenants due to them not being able to pay rent.

Smallwood has resorted to lowering the rates of the remaining tenants who are still in business.

“It has been an absolute nightmare,” she said.

According to Smallwood, owners and employees have lost income due to business being badly affected in the area.

“I have sent emails to the Ekurhuleni council but there was no response,” she said.

Ward 24 councillor Kabelo Mahonko said the roadworks have caused so much stress to councillors, residents and businesses.

“We were supposed to do the handover on September 7 but that hasn’t happened because the date has been moved so many times,” she said.

According to Mahonko, the issue between the contractor and the sub-contractor could have been avoided.

“They took the matter into their own hands instead of asking for direct assistance from the metro,” she said.
