Benoni SPCA warns about heatwave

People and animals alike are at risk during heatwaves. Heatstroke and dehydration are possible from being exposed to harsh weather conditions.

The Benoni SPCA has issued a warning to the public regarding pets and animals as temperatures soar this week due to a heatwave across some provinces.

According to South African Weather Services, temperatures are set to rise to the mid-30s in some regions.

Benoni SPCA manager Vicky Finnemore said during this time pet owners need to take extra care over their animals.

“Under no circumstances should people leave their pets in a parked vehicle in this heat,” said Finnemore.

“One does not realise how quickly temperatures inside a stationary vehicle can rise, rising well over 10 degrees higher than outside the vehicle.

“Pet owners must ensure their pets have 24-hour access to water, and this includes all domestic animals, farm animals and exotics.

“Shelter is a necessity in this heat.
