International Day of Charity supported locally

The message from the charity shops was simple: “Please donate to support our worthy causes”.

The International Day of Charity was established by the United Nations (UN) and is celebrated annually on September 5.

The City Times recently visited local charity shops in the area.

Among them are the Salvation Army charity shops on Rothsay Street in the Benoni CBD and the Benoni SPCA charity shop on Klein Street in Lakefield.

The Salvation Army charity shops sell furniture and clothing and funds raised help to run the organisation that assists the homeless with shelter, clothes and food.

The SPCA sells items that vary from books, clothing, electronics, hats and crockery.

“Funds raised go toward covering vet bills for the stray, unwanted and confiscated animals that need medical assistance or sterilisation,” said SPCA manager Vicky Finnemore.

According to the UN webpage, International Day of Charity is chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, India.

This is done in order to help others through volunteer and philanthropic activities.

The UN states charity provides real social bonding and contributes to the creation of inclusive and more resilient societies.

They believe charity can alleviate the worst effects of humanitarian crises, and supplement public services in health care, education, housing and child protection.

“Rights of the marginalised and underprivileged are promoted and the message of humanity is spread, even in conflict situations,” says the UN.

Mother Teresa, born August 26, 1910, became a global figure for her philanthropic activities and what is noted as her widespread kindness and ability to care for those who needed it most.

She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for helping to alleviate poverty and distress. She died on September 5, 1997.
