Update: Cause for fire at recycling plant in Benoni South unknown

Update after fire in Benoni South this morning

No one was injured and damage was limited after a fire broke out at Leicester Road Recycling Plant in the Benoni South Industrial area on August 2 around 10.30am.

Disaster and Emergency Management Services spokesperson William Ntladi said when they received the call it was said to be a structural fire.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

According to a business owner in the area, the fire broke out as the result of copper and scrap metal being illegally burned on the property.

The business owner, who wished to remain anonymous, told the City Times that there have been several break-ins at his business as recyclers steal steel and manhole covers to sell to the scrapyard.

“As businesses on this street we have tried to clean up the street but efforts were in vain.”

He added that if the scrap yard could stop accepting stolen steel maybe then there won’t be so many break-ins.

The business owner said there are no fire hydrant points for emergency services on the street and that is a risk to all businesses in the area.

Ntladi did not confirm at the time of publishing if there aren’t fire hydrant points in the area.
