Ebotse Links triumphs over Benoni Country Club

The battle was on between the two Benoni courses.

Ebotse Links and Benoni Country Club (BCC) battled it out at the third annual Open Challenge played between the members of both clubs from July 20 to 21.

Both teams consist of 16 players and the event takes place over two days at the two courses.

On Friday morning, Ebotse’s golfers received a warm welcome at BCC at 5.30am as the players warmed up for the first round of the challenge, playing foursomes, which teed-off at 6.30am.

After the foursomes, BCC had a 5.5/2.5 lead.

The second round was played in the afternoon at Ebotse Links, as the teams played the BetterBall Matchplay format.

The second round teed-off from 11am and was evenly matched as both teams took four points at the end of that round.

This left BCC with a 9.5/6.5 lead going into the second day and final round of Singles Matchplay.

The teams got together at Ebotse Links at 7am on Saturday morning and the teams’ spirits were high.

Both came out fighting and, after nine holes, it looked as though BCC were going to walk away with the trophy.

On the back nine, the Ebotse Links team fought back and at the end of the round, the Links claimed 10 points out of the 16 points available, which gave Ebotse Links a 16.5/15.5 win.

Ebotse Links now lead 2/1 in the challenge.

“Thanks must go to the people that commit their time and efforts in preparing this challenge every year,” said Dean Kupferman, golf director at Ebotse Links.
