Daveyton residents, together with members of the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco), took the initiative to keep the Sinaba Stadium in Daveyton clean.
The residents saw the need for cleaning the stadium as it was being vandalised and wasn’t safe for children to participate in any sport.
Fikile Nkosi, founder of the clean-up said they started cleaning the stadium two months ago as they saw that most people are unemployed in the area and they decided to do make use of the time available on their hands.
“The stadium was unsafe, residents turned it into a dumping zone and it was also a palace for drug addicts,” said Nkosi.
“Now that we clean up regularly, our kids are able to come to participate in sporting activities without the fear of being robbed or bullied by the drug addicts.”
Co-founder of the clean-up Nsizwa Mahlangu said the councillor has been very supportive of the clean-up and he has employed some of their volunteers in projects that benefit the community.
“We urge other community members to joins us in making Daveyton cleaner.”
Ward 69 Councillor Lawrence Ndhlovu said he applauds the residents for lending a helping hand.
“I appreciate the work that the residents have done and I encourage others residents to assist where they can to make our area cleaner,” said Ndhlovu.
The group of 20 volunteers cleans the stadium every Tuesday and Thursday from 9am until 11pm.
They are in need of donations of wheelbarrows, lawn mowers or trimmers and stiff brooms.
