Northerns firsts lose again, reserves still top of the table

The Northerns reserves are perched at the top of their league while the first side continues to struggle.

Jannie van den Berg, head coach of Benoni Northerns Football Club’s (BNFC) Senior Super League side, was cut a disappointed figure following a 2-1 defeat at home to Sporting on June 23.

Another loss in the Eastern Local Football Association’s (ELFA) Super League was a bitter pill to swallow for the coach who believes that his young chargers were the more dominant of the two teams on the afternoon.

The loss saw his side move down to ninth position in the 14-team league.

“We just can’t get the ball into the net,” he told the City Times.

“The lads are putting the effort in, creating and finding the right spaces and playing well, but it must be a self-belief thing that is hampering us as we just can’t score the goals.

“I am as puzzled as most.

“The effort is not being rewarded, but at the end of the day it comes down to perseverance.”

The coach admitted that he could do with an experienced centre-back and a chance-converting striker in his team, but stressed that this season’s results do not paint the entire picture.

“Our football at the club is healthy with regard to developing young players and all of these matches provide good learning material for the youngsters.

“I am frustrated because I, like the spectators, want immediate winning results, but there is a bigger vision.

“We are on our own little journey with this team.”

He and the team will hope to put some smiles on the spectators’ faces when they host an unpredictable Zwide outfit at Northerns on June 30.

Meanwhile, it has been a different tale in terms of results for coach Darren ‘Fish’ Lee’s Senior Super Reserve League side.

A 13th win of the campaign (out of 16 matches) in the earlier match of the afternoon against Sporting meant that Lee’s team maintained their five point lead above Luso Africa in the Reserve League.

The team cantered to a 7-1 demolition job of their opponents on Saturday.

They will strive to pick up another three points against Zwide this weekend

The BNFC reserves open proceedings at 1.45pm followed by the first side at 3.30pm.

Spectators are encouraged to show their support.
