Show your support for the Panties and Bras for a Purpose campaign

The Panties and Bras for a Purpose campaign is a corporate social initiative by the Flojo Foundation.

The aim of this campaign is to shine a spotlight on disadvantaged young girls and to help empower them and develop their potential.

“We made it our priority to ensure that no girl will be deprived of her education because of a lack of physical needs such as sanitary pads, school stationery or uniforms.

“We also believe that social and economic empowerment of women is the beginning of the end of poverty in our communities,” says Florence Khoza, a founding member of Panties and Bras for a Purpose campaign.

Langaville Primary School, in Tsakane, and Nkumbulo High School, in KwaThema, have been recognised as two of the schools that require such assistance.

An activation will be held at the Springs Mall on June 30, where members of the community are encouraged to assist with donating required necessities for underprivileged girls.

With various sanitary towel campaigns taking place around the country, such as the Happy Days campaign, these initiatives highlight the fact that many young girls still struggle with getting sanitary towels, panties and bras.

According to Nkuli Nzimande, one of the other founders of Panties and Bras for a Purpose campaign, some of the girls don’t take part in extra-mural activities at school because they do not have the necessary underwear, tampons and pads.

As part of the Panties and Bras for a Purpose campaign, various collection points have been set up around Ekurhuleni, including all Caxton East and South offices, where members of the community can donate panties, bras, sanitary pads and tampons.

Donations can be delivered to the African Reporter and Springs Advertiser offices at 48 Fifth Avenue, Springs CBD.

The collection campaign will run until the end of July.

Other drop-off points are:

• Eyeland Optometrists, East Rand Mall.

• Langaville Primary School, in Tsakane.

• Nkumbulo High School, in KwaThema.

• Auto Alpina Springs – BMW Dealership in Springs CBD.

• The Springs Advertiser/African Reporter offices

• Intercessor Army Franchising, in Tembisa

A team has also been assembled in Ekurhuleni to help with the campaign of this project and to also mentor these young girls over a period of a year.

According to Khoza, some young girls wear the same underwear week in, week out because they have nothing else to change into and this raises some health concerns.

The lack of access to sanitary towels also results in some learners being absent from school.

The Panties and Bras for a Purpose campaign is an annual initiative which is taking place in Gauteng and Durban at the moment, with the aim of being implemented in other provinces.
