Lakefield’s Aslam Mahomed, an executive member of Martial Arts South Africa and executive member of the South African Kickboxing Association, was awarded for his dedication to the development and upliftment of sport at the Arnold Classics Africa.

Mahomed was congratulated for the award by Gideon Sam, president of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc).

Sam reiterated that the development and upliftment of sport is a priority in Africa and that Mahomed must continue his efforts throughout Africa by working together with the African Union to take sport further and make African sport greater.

“It is a very humbling experience receiving this award,” said the Benonian, who is also the chief instructor at the United Martial Arts Benoni dojo.

Mahomed said he is aiming to take the sport to the rural areas of Africa.

“We have extremely talented sportsmen and sportswomen in Africa and by working together we can achieve our goals in uplifting rural communities and the entire continent.”

Mahomed is currently working with the Department of Sports and Recreation to develop anti-bullying and anti-rape courses at basic education level throughout South Africa.
