Three bodies, suspected to be those of illegal miners, were found near an old mine shaft close to the Putfontein off-ramp on May 27 around 11am.
Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said police received a tip-off and responded to the scene.
The bodies all had gunshot wounds.

“Further information revealed the victims might have been killed underground and their bodies dumped above ground,” said Sekele.
It is believed the deaths may be a result of a turf war between two groups of illegal mining groups.
A case of murder was opened at the Benoni SAPS.
No arrests have been made and the police are investigating.
In another incident, a body of an alleged illegal miner was found on May 25 at the Putfontein off-ramp.
The man was found on the side of the road.
An inquest docket was opened at the Benoni SAPS.
