Good day at the office for Northerns rugby sides

Defending was good on the day and in the end, Benoni was too strong.

Benoni Northerns Rugby Club’s (BNRC) second and first sides are starting to find winning momentum in their respective Valke Merlin League competitions.

The Meyerton Rugby Club came to town on May 12 and headed back home on the losing side.

Benoni’s second XV kicked-off proceedings with a 29-10 win while the first XV wrapped up a successful day with a nervy 48-46 victory over their Meyerton guests.

The seconds enjoyed a good game with their forwards working hard and opening gaps for the back line.

Defending was good on the day and in the end, Benoni was too strong.

Try-scorers were Chad Bertasso, Chandré Holmes, Felix Toma, Kevin Venter and Wentzel Robbertz. Michael John Reichert and Chandré Holmes scored a conversion each.

It was a try-fest in the first team match that was a real nail-biter.

Towards the end of the game, each team continually exchanged the lead with every score.

With one minute left, Meyerton took the lead (43-46) and the game looked lost for Benoni.

With a good kick-off, Jesse Antonio Bekker took the ball out of the air and the crowd went crazy giving the guys a boost.

From there on after, a few phases of rucks Benoni ended up scoring in the corner courtesy of their prop Rudolf ‘Panda’ van Loggenberg.

Morné Venter scored a sublime hat trick of tries, van Loggenberg scored two tries while Michael de Lange, Robbie Patterson and Ruan du Plessis each scored a try.

Jay Botha slotted four successful and valuable conversions.
