KOI makes waves

Benonians watch out for this band.

Since we last chatted to Kings of Improv (KOI) members, the band has been recognised for bigger achievements.

“The South African Metal Music Awards (Samma) took place at Rumours Rock City, recently,” said band member, Lloyd Mckeen.

“We didn’t win but were nominated in two categories, namely Best Prog Band and Best Album, which was a huge achievement for us just to be recognised.”

Byron Muller (bass/guitar), Mckeen (bass/guitar), Chad Snell (guitar) and Slade du Randt (drums) – who are all linked to Benoni – also recently performed at the Misty Waters Music Festival at Lake Umuzi.

“It was fantastic, a great music festival with an amazing lineup,” said Mckeen, who lives in Farramere.

“We closed off the Saturday evening, following legends and blues stalwarts alike, such as Dan Patlansky and Albert Frost.”

The four are in the process of writing and pre-production to release a new album before the end of the year if all goes to plan.

“Our next gig is taking place on June 9 at Rumours Rock City in Cresta, the event is called Let There Be Prog.”
