BNAC chairman extends a welcome to runners, walkers ahead of the Robor Scaffolding Marathon

Benoni Northerns Athletic Club is ready to welcome you.

The Benoni City Times and Caxton Local Newspapers are thrilled to be back as media partners with race hosts Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) ahead of the Robor Scaffolding Marathon on April 29.

BNAC chairman John Ansell has this message for the runners and walkers, interested individuals and motorists:

“That this is only the second time that Robor Scaffolding and BNAC will be joining forces to present the annual Robor Scaffolding Marathon speaks volumes about the race and the partnership – it feels like Robor is part of the BNAC family already.

“As a club, we are really excited about welcoming, what we expect will be close to 7 000 runners to Benoni Northerns once again.

“A good portion of the runners lining up at the start, particularly for the 10km and 5km, will be local residents.

“This is very exciting for the sport; road running is no longer exclusively the preserve of serious ultra-distance runners.

“Running is a sport which anyone can participate in with the minimum of financial outlay.

“That said we will have many runners who will be running the 42.2km (standard marathon) and the 50km races with a view of qualifying for Comrades or as part of their training for the Ultimate Human Race.

“The core of the race is a 21km route which we believe offers runners a reasonably fast course – it’s not entirely flat, with a climb out of Ebotse being the main climb of the route.

“The marathon is two laps of the 21km route and the 50km adds an additional 7.8km loop through leafy Northmead.

“Many people see the highlight of the route being the 2km through Ebotse, with about half of that being through the golf course.

“We have tried to pick a route which shows off the best of Benoni, while also trying to keep disruptions to the residents to a minimum.

“The support and responses that we receive from the community of Benoni are overwhelmingly positive.

“Though we do ask that if you find yourself stuck at an intersection as the race comes past, please be patient, hop out the car and cheer on some of the extraordinary talents that South Africa has in road running.”

Late entries

Late entries will be taken from Benoni Northerns Sports Club on April 28 from 10am to 5pm and on the morning of the race from 4:30am.
