Metro assists gogo with flooding issue after 32 years

Gogo Gladice finally received service delivery.

Gogo Gladice Sechai (80) has lived in a house that frequently floods whenever it rains for the past 32 years, damaging her furniture and home appliances.

According to MMC for Infrastructure Services, Clr Robert Mashego, the flooding of her house in Daveyton was a result of the stormwater drainage system that was left incomplete in 1986 and the blocking of the drainage pipes.

On April 6, Mashego visited Sechai to put her 32-year plight to an end.

“We are a government that cares about the elderly and it is unfortunate that she had to live in distress for such a long time,” Mashego said.

“As we speak now, a team is already on site unblocking an 80-metre concrete stormwater pipe to channel water into the stormwater drainage system.”

Mashego said the construction work on the drainage system outside Sechai’s home will include the opening of three new concrete kerb inlets and improvement of an already existing inlet to channel rainwater into the stormwater drainage system.

According to Mashego, kerb inlets are often blocked due to foreign objects being swept into it during heavy rains.

While the construction work is underway, Sechai will be assisted by the municipality, through the Daveyton Customer Care Centre, to put a claim for damage of some of the items that were damaged by the heavy rains a few weeks ago.

“I’m glad my pleas have not fallen on deaf ears,” said Sechai.

“At my age, I cannot continue to live in fear of being flooded in my own home whenever it rains.”

Residents are urged to report any blocked or damaged municipal infrastructure through the call centre on 086 054 3000.
