Crystal Park crematorium out of order

It is unclear when the crematorium will operate again.

A Benoni-based funeral parlour alleges that the crematorium at the Lala Ngoxolo Cemetery in Crystal Park has not been operating since early this year.

The parlour said the crematorium was out of service for at least six weeks in 2017 because they constantly run out of gas.

“It is also alleged that they’ve been operating without a licence.”

“It is a problem for us undertakers because we have to use the Brapkan crematorium whose prices are a bit higher as it is privately owned.”

Ward 24 Clr Kabelo Mohonko said the Lala Ngoxolo Cemetery is the only crematorium operated by the Ekurhuleni metro.

She said it is temporarily closed as a result of serious technical issues with the newly installed cremators which pose health and safety concerns.

“The matter is being investigated in conjunction with our project management team and the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) and their sub-contractor, MacroTech,” said Mohonko.

“Unfortunately, it is difficult to give a definite time frame and we have advised undertakers to use alternative crematoriums in the interim.”

Mahonko said the Mooifontein and Brakpan crematoriums are operated by private enterprises.

The metro has been contacted for comment, but none had been received at the time of going to print.
