Lakefield resident aims to inspire women

Hawa Shahaboodien shares her story to inspire other women.

Lakefield resident Hawa Shahaboodien is not only the proud owner of a hair salon but also one of the writers of a book which will be published and launched at the Joburg Theatre on April 8.

Shahaboodien, with 49 other authors, wrote the anthology about the reality faced by Muslim women.

The title of the book is Saffron and can be purchased at Exclusive Books and African Perspectives Publishing.

“My story deals with my lived reality, what I do on a daily basis and what I prioritise in my life,” said Shahaboodien, who is a debut author.

“It also speaks about the importance of looking after ‘me’ first, in order to be a good mother and wife.”

The book further analysis the life Muslim women live with regards to food and cooking, hardships faced and conflict, intimacy, children, living with in-laws and self-esteem, among others.

“The narratives will remind and reassure that as a woman, you will never journey alone,” the author said.

“The narratives in Saffron will help to reflect on what marriage means, or, if you are married, to better understand your husband and yourself.”
