Man sentenced for Daveyton murder

The man is serving his sentence at the Modderbee Prison

Bulelani Petrus Chaza received a life sentence for the murder of Portia Cokotho on March 26 in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court.

Chaza was also sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

On September 25, 2013, the 43-year-old stabbed Cokotho on Bhele Street in Daveyton and fled the scene.

Cokotho was rushed to the Daveyton Main Clinic where she was certified dead.

Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said Chaza was arrested on February 23, 2014.

He was then granted bail at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court.

“Chaza disappeared and didn’t return for the trial. A warrant of arrest was then issued by the court,” said Sekele.

“The man was then arrested on August 26, 2016, by the Putfontien police and was found to be in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.”

Sekele said Chaza’s warrant of arrest for the murder charge was then executed.

Chaza is serving his sentence in Modderbee Prison.

The Ekurhuleni Central Cluster commander Maj Gen Poobalan Subbiah commended Const Det Mthokozisi Ngwenya for a job well done.
