Benoni coal mine depicted in post-apocalyptic environment

She is opposing the planned coal mine in Benoni.

Natasja Beverloo, a Serengeti Estate resident, is protesting the possible coal mine to open near Benoni by using her photography and editing skills.

She took a photo of her daughter, 15-year-old Megan Stanton, posing with a gas mask and edited her surroundings to resemble a post-apocalyptic environment.

The photo has ‘Benoni Coal 2029. Will we walk like this?’ written on it.

She said she decided to take the photo to raise awareness about the dangers of the coal mine should it be opened close to residential areas.

“If it destroys all of our clean air, we will have to move,” she said about her family.

The photo comes after information surfaced stating that mining company Bheka Masinga Global are submitting a preliminary Basic Assessment Report (BAR) to mine coal near Benoni.

The planned mining area is apparently located about 15.26km north-east of the Kempton Park CBD, 22km south-west of Delmas and 2km south-west of Bapsfontein.

Beverloo said Serengeti Estate “looks over” the mining area.
