Playhouse pays homage to loyal patron

Margaret Todd was remembered.

Protea Stage Productions hosted The Margaret Todd Memorial Showcase on March 9 and 10 at Tom Newby School.

The night started with Bob Stone, the chairman of Protea Stage Productions, welcoming the audience to the event and extending a special greeting to Margaret’s son, Murray.

“My mother loved amateur theatre,” he said.

“Many of the actors who began their acting career at Protea Stage Productions have gone on to act in different productions and shows in theatre and on TV.”

Protea collaborated with Franklin Players, Roodepoort Little Theatre, Startime Players and the Edenvale Acting and Drama Society.

The evenings included the presentation of seven short five to 10-minute plays from Protea. Each one had a different theme.

Plays included Casabrakpan, Edgeways, Tobacco Road, Beer Window, Two Woofs for Yes, The Golden Years Room in the Womb as well as Sound and Lights.

Startime Players then entertained the audience with a variety of musical items pulled together with a few lines of dialogue to create a story about how theatre becomes your life. The story reflected the way relationships are formed and how when people leave our world, they will never be forgotten.

The Edenvale Acting and Drama Society presented a play called Trash Hound, which follows the life of an informal recycler as he navigates a post-apocalyptic and post-water South Africa in an effort to try and deal with his past.

The evening ended with one last word from Stone when he quoted Todd’s favourite line, “Carpe Diem”.
