Rubber Duc waddles to The Festival

The dukes, I mean Ducs, are making their debut appearance at The Festival @ St Dunstan’s on May 12 to rock the socks off festival-goers.

Rubber Duc was supposed to perform at the 2017 festival, but the rain came down, so Mother Duck said quack, quack, quack and called all her rubber ducs back.

‘Duc’ is the French word for duke, a man of high social rank.

The band, Nick Jordaan, Brendan Campbell, Sheldon Sham and Amiel Gopal, did not put too much thought into the name, although it serves them well.

“Brendan and I just decided to be DJs who wore duck suits and that’s where the name came from,” Jordaan said.

Today, though, the group says the name does not make the band. The music does.

“The name becomes cool when the band becomes cool,” Sham said.

The interview was unlike any other; the four not only build on each other’s ideas, but also finish each other’s sentences before forgetting what the question was after digressing to several memories and cracking jokes.

Event organiser Paul Smith had customised construction hats made for the guys and then took them for a tour of the E John Butler Centre, which is under construction ahead of the school’s centenary celebration this year.

After conquering dust, construction work and rain, the group sat by the chapel for an interview with St Dunstan’s Grade 12 learner Justine Croker (17).

Campbell said initially the group performed cover songs by girls only.

“Now we have grown a lot; when we write new music, it starts off with an idea and everyone builds on it,” Campbell said.

The group does not have a specific genre, believing that music should not be placed in a box.

The four are in the process of writing their next extended play and consider this music different to their previous work.

“Our lives have changed and so has our music since we started,” said Gopal, who was the last member to join the band.

Sham said the new music has deeper meaning to it.

The group gave advice to upcoming artists:

• Music is a percentage; make sure you have a good team.

• Invest in your business before looking at how it will make money.

• Be yourself, be realistic, stay current and always look at the bigger picture.

• Keep moving forward.

The four recently released new Rubber Duc merchandise, including caps and T-shirts.
