UPDATE: Woman (21) stabbed to death in Western Extension saved her mother’s life

The mother is still in hospital.

“She saved her mom and lost her life.”

These are the words of a Boksburg resident whose granddaughter was stabbed to death in Western Extension on Monday.

A man named Charles (his surname is not known at this stage), who is charged with the murder and attempted murder which took place on Kemston Avenue, appeared in the Benoni Regional Court on March 7.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said the accused was discharged from hospital yesterday afternoon.

He was hospitalised after being arrested near the East Rand Trader’s Square flea market, in North Rand Road, shortly after the incident. Sekele said the man had swallowed pills.

The grandmother, who did not want to be named or have her loved ones’ names mentioned, said her daughter, who is still in hospital, was saved by the 21-year-old.

“It is very, very difficult at the moment,” the woman said when asked how the family was coping.

She said her daughter was stabbed numerous times and she does not know when she will be discharged from hospital.

The accused was apparently on parole for murder.

Sekele said the accused has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance on March 14.
