Public will have chance to comment on planned coal mine

A message has been circulating on various social media platforms and groups about a prospective coal mine in the area.

Many community members have contacted the City Times to express their concerns.

Consultancy KeMu Holdings, which was appointed by Bheka Masinga Global, has submitted a prospecting rights application to the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR).

The DMR has yet to confirm whether it received the application, but the completed documents were seen by the City Times.

According to the documents, Bheka Masinga Global plans to mine coal at a site 15.26km north-east of Kempton Park, 22km south-east of Delmas and two kilometres south-west of Bapsfontein.

KeMu Holdings said: “Prospecting will take place over a three-year period and will comprise non-invasive methods (e.g. desktop study and geological mapping) as well as invasive methods (e.g. core drilling) divided into three phases.”

Lungisani Mazibuko, owner of KeMu Holdings, said interested and affected parties (I&APs) have asked for more time to comment on the prospecting application.

“We have requested the extension to the DMR. We are still awaiting for their response,” he added.

He said the company will listen to all the parties before it submits its final Basic Assessment Report (BAR).

“We will let the I&AP parties know about the extension and meetings that will follow after,” Mazibuko said.

The City Times is awaiting feedback from the DMR and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.
