Years of wasted water

Resident concerned with constant flow of water

Brentwood Park resident Christo van den Heever says he has had a water leak outside his property for about five years.

The resident has reported the leak to Ward 23 Clr André du Plessis.

According to van den Heever, the leak comes from a valve outside his property.

Water has been leaking from the valve for about five years.

Van den Heever said he reported the leak and municipal workers came out to assess it about two years ago.

“The council has created a mess with taxpayers’ money because of the unaccounted for water,” said du Plessis.

According to the councillor the amount of water overflowing onto the grass could possibly cause the wall to collapse.

Apart from that, the valve affects the water supply to the homes of residents.

“They have low water pressure here,” said du Plessis.

“And I have been asking for the water system to be upgraded in Brentwood Park for four years now.”

The sewage pump station down the road also gets affected by the overflowing water because it too overflows, resulting in sewage flowing into the street and into residents’ yards.

“Ratepayers have to pay for this because the municipality refuses to address the issue of failed infrastructure in the area.”

Du Plessis pointed out the concrete manhole standing next to the valve, saying it had been delivered there about two years ago.

“About R783-million has been lost in revenue throughout the last financial year for unaccounted water,” said du Plessis.

He said he would report the issue once again to the municipality.

Comment had not been received from the metro by the time of publication.
