Supersized pumpkins in Brentwood Park

A massive pumpkin occupies the garden.

Mike Chibeda planted two pumpkins which grew much bigger than he expected.

Chibeda said he planted the pumpkins about two months ago.

“I dug a hole in the ground, put the seeds in and put in some fertilizer,” he said

“I watered the plant every day and, after two weeks, I added some more fertilizer.”

The part-time farmer said he estimated the pumpkins weighed about 40 or 45kgs.

He said this was the first time he planted pumpkins.

Apart from pumpkins, Chibeda grows gem squash, mealies, tomatoes, potatoes and onions.

Chibeda plants vegetables on a property in Brentwood Park, where he rents.

Gabriel Zackey, who also lives on the property, is amazed by the effort.

“It’s amazing and unique; he is a great farmer,” said Zackey.

“It’s not every day that you see a pumpkin like this,” said Gerda, Gabriel’s wife.

Zackey said the vegetable could not be lifted by one person. It needs at least two or three people to raise it.
