Alfred Freddy Setlale was sentenced to 65 years’ imprisonment for double murder and two counts of attempted murder, of which 35 years will be suspended.

Setlale was sentenced in the North Gauteng High Court on December 11.

The 38-year-old shot and killed his wife and one of his sons before injuring his 18-month-old daughter in Mogoba, Putfontein on August 15, 2016.

Putfontein SAPS spokesperson Const Justice Ramaube said Setlale tried to shoot his 12-year-old son, who managed to escape from the house, before inflicting injuries on his 18-month-old daughter that left her in a critical condition in the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

“After witnessing his father shooting his mother, the son rushed outside to call for help,” said Ramaube.

Ramaube said the father allegedly ran after his son and tried to shoot him, but the boy managed to escape.

“He then went back to the house and hit his daughter against the wall.”

The spokesperson said the man later allegedly tried to kill himself but did not succeed.

Setlale was arrested shortly after the incident. He first appeared in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court before his case was moved to the Gauteng High Court.

Putfontein SAPS station commander Lt Col Wellington Mathiane praised Det Const Sifiso Seloane for a job well done in securing a lengthy sentence.

Setlale is serving his sentence at the Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre in Pretoria.
