Principal James Wright said it happened after school and the girl was waiting, with a friend, for her mother.

“Someone walked past them and wanted to take her phone,” he said.

Wright said when the girl started screaming, a Grade 11 learner tackled the suspect in front of a CMS vehicle.

“Within half an hour we sorted everything out. The girl’s mother came to see me and the police were here,” said Wright.

The man allegedly tried to grab her phone, but only managed to get her cooler bag.

He then ran away but was then tackled by the other learner.

“He didn’t get away with anything, but a case of theft was still opened,” said the girl’s mother.

She also said her daughter is “rattled”, but she went to school on February 15.

“It is important for parents to know what happened and to know your children are not safe outside of school parameters,” she warned.
