SAPS clamps down on illegal mining

The police seized a variety of illegal mining equipment.

Combined police units swooped on an informal settlement on Golden Drive on February 1 as part of a police clampdown on illegal mining.

Members of the Ekurhuleni Central Cluster’s 11 stations were joined in the raid by members of the Trio Task Team, the K9 unit and the Germiston, Tshwane, Vaal and Johannesburg Police Emergency Services (PES).

The operation started at 9am and ran through to 3pm.

The police seized a variety of illegal mining equipment, including 24 pendukas, 12 metal pots and 200 metal balls, along with a quantity of alcohol.

Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesperson, Capt Nomsa Sekele, said the aim of the operation was to put a stop to illegal mining in the area.

The operation will be ongoing.

No arrests were made.
