LISTEN: Receive free tutoring

Creating future leaders.

Helping learner’s improve their grades is what inspired the Tutoring Skeem youngsters to start free tutoring classes.

Tutoring Skeem is a non-profit organisation, which was founded in 2017 by a group of young people from around Benoni.

The chief marketing officer of Tutoring Skeem, Repholositswe Kgobe, said the organisation was founded to equip learners with the necessary skills that will enable them to embark on the careers that they desire.

“We saw the need to assist learners in our community to improve their grades so they can get admitted to higher institutions of learning,” said Kgobe.

The organisation currently has 30 tutors.

“Most of our tutors are university students; however, we are in need of more volunteers for our Saturday classes, as most of our tutors are available during school holidays.”

Kgobe said they are currently tutoring Grade 11 and 12 learners because they usually need the most help.

“These are very crucial grades when it comes to applying at universities, but we do have plans of tutoring other grades in the near future,” she said.

A former student of Tutoring Skeem, Simphiwe Rasegwete, said he was one of the lucky students to attend the extra classes.

“I was an average learner and I really needed help with my studies. I started attending classes from January 2017 and the skills I was gaining there made a difference,” said Rasegwete.

“Being taught by young people made me feel confident, as I was not afraid to ask if I didn’t understand something, which was something hard for us to ask the teachers in class.”

He said his grades started improving and he got higher marks in mathematics.

Rasegwete obtained 95 per cent for mathematics, life sciences (82 per cent) and physical sciences (91 per cent) during his 2017 final matric results.

“I will be studying towards a BSc in astronomy and astrophysics at the University of the Witwatersrand all thanks to Tutoring Skeem and I didn’t even pay them a cent.”

Kgobe said it is the most fulfilling thing when learners produce results like Rasegwete did.

“It gives us great joy when learners thank us for giving them this opportunity and most importantly when they study towards careers that they love,” she said.

“It’s not every day you get to be tutored by a future doctor or astrophysicist; hence, our motto is: ‘Education through motivation and inspiration’,” she added.

Classes are held on Saturdays and during school holidays at the Etwatwa Secondary School in Wattville.
