UPDATE: EMM fixes massive water leak

Council will inspect the pipe in the future.

A freshwater leak in Alphen Park has been fixed said Ward 28 Clr Malanie Haggard.

The City Times reported on January 17 the leak in a main pipe, adjacent to Mercury Street, was causing a chain reaction of problems in the suburb.

The leak was spurring the growth of vegetation, creating a hidden area for squatters to live in.

Rob McMaster, one of the directors of the Alphen Park Homeowners’ Association, said the amount of clean water that went to waste was worrisome.

“Everything is sorted, for now, we will have an inspection next week to see if all is still well,” she said.

She added that the community proclaimed the area as a sanctuary and the maintenance of the vegetation in Alphen Park is still a grey area.

“I will schedule a meeting with the residents to establish their roles,” she said.

Haggard said she informed the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality of the squatters living in a field in the area.

“The EMPD is aware of the people living there and they do rounds to remove them,” she said but explained they usually come back after about three days.
