Man arrested for making false robbery charge

A 44-year-old man was arrested on a charge of perjury on January 15 after allegedly opening a false robbery case against someone he felt had ill-treated him.

The man is expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (January 17).

“It is alleged that on January 13 at about 6.55pm the suspect was drinking at the tavern in Princes Avenue, whereupon according to [the suspect] he took out his wallet as he wanted to buy a beer,” Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said.

According to Sekele, the suspect said the security guard who was on duty grabbed him and took his wallet, which contained money and cards, and chased him outside.

The man then opened a case of common robbery against the security guard.

“On Monday at about 10.30am the suspect arrived at the police station, as he was summoned by the detective to assist them in identifying the security guard who robbed him,” Sekele said.

“The detectives interviewed and searched him, only to find the very same wallet and cards that he mentioned he was robbed off, in his possession.”

Sekele said the man confessed to opening a false robbery case as he was ill-treated by the guard.

“He was immediately arrested and detained at Benoni Police Station cells,” she said.

“The Benoni station commander issues a warning to the community that they will be arrested for perjury if they open false cases as they will be wasting state resources.”
