One Facebook user wrote that “surely by now someone should know something about this sickening stench[,] we need feedback please”.

Various other community members described the smell as “horrible”, “awful” and “ridiculous”.

Ward 27 Clr Jacques Meiring said two of the sources have been established after he was accompanied by the COO of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), Lesiba Joe Mojapelo.

“Various other EMM management members and East Rand Water Care Association (Erwat) members also gathered for a meeting to establish the sources,” said Meiring.

He said he cannot comment on the two sources as he is not in a position to do so.

“Since we discovered the two sources, the smell isn’t nearly as bad as it was, but we are still trying to find other sources,” said Meiring.

He added, however, “it seems to [him] that [they] did beat the situation”.

EMM spokesperson Themba Gadebe said the Health and Social Development Department did not receive a notification nor investigate any complaints regarding foul smells in Benoni.

“Officials from the Health and Social Development Department will conduct an investigation regarding the … matter,” said Gadebe.

“Clr Jacques Meiring was contacted for more information regarding the investigation conducted by Ekurhuleni officials and the councillor confirmed the investigation.”

He concluded that a joint investigation will be conducted by EMM to determine the cause of the smell in the week of January 8.
