Benoni schools are proud of their matric results

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has applauded the class of 2017 for achieving a 75.1 per cent pass rate, including progressed learners.

The pass rate is a 2.6 per cent improvement over the previous year.

Belvedere School, Crystal Park High School and Unity Secondary School were among the schools that improved from their previous pass rate.

Below is a breakdown of the three schools’ performance:

• Belvedere School

2017 pass rate: 97 per cent

2016 pass rate: 88 per cent

Matric pupils: 34

Distinctions: 1

Principal Hannes du Plessis’s comment: “We are really proud of our teachers and learners. They did extremely well.”

• Crystal Park High School

2017 pass rate: 90.2 per cent

2016 pass rate: 85.29 per cent

Matric learners: 61

Distinctions: To be confirmed

University exemption: 77 per cent

Principal Barrel Mabhaya’s comment: “We are over the moon with our results. For the past three years we have been getting 85 per cent and for the first time we reached a 90 per cent pass rate. We are really proud.”

• Unity Secondary School

2017 pass rate: 96.3 per cent

2016 pass rate: 87.5 per cent

Matric learners: 270

Distinctions: 81

Principal Wandile James Makhubu’s comment: “I am very proud of our learners and the team of dedicated teachers who worked to make sure their children passed well enough to get bursaries to go to university. Our quality of education is very good for a township school and we are proud.”
