Class of 2017 does their schools proud

As members of the class of 2017 collected their Grade 12 certificates on January 5, many stood with a smile.

The following schools had a pass rate of 85 per cent or higher and the principals are said to be very proud of the learners and grateful for the staff’s hard work.

• Petit High School

2017 pass rate: 90.27 per cent

2016 pass rate: 94 per cent

Matric learners: 178

Distinctions: 14

University exemption: 29.23 per cent

Principal Marina Nortier’s comment: “Last year was a difficult year with many challenges for Petit High School. I am very proud of our class of 2017. They have tried very hard to achieve. I [also] need to convey my gratitude to my staff for their hard work and commitment.”

• Kathstan College

2017 pass rate: 100 per cent

2016 pass rate: 100 per cent

Matric learners: 14

Distinctions: 11

University exemption: ±70 per cent

Deputy principal Johan Haasbroek’s comment: “We are very proud of our students, especially in the light that many of our students won’t have a chance in other schools. I would also like to commend the staff for their dedication and hard work.”

• Hoërskool Brandwag

2017 pass rate: 97.3 per cent

2016 pass rate: 99.3 per cent

Matric learners: 98

Distinctions: 98

University exemption: 64 per cent

Principal James Wright’s comment: “I am sad that many pupils sit with 79 per cent for subjects where they could’ve had a distinction for it. Our standards increase every year and we work for a 100 per cent pass rate each year. I would like to thank our staff for their excellence.”

• Noorderlig Gekombineerde Skool

2017 pass rate: 85 per cent

2016 pass rate: 95 per cent

Matric learners: 112

Distinctions: 49

University exemption: 42.85 per cent

• Shanan Christian School

2017 pass rate: 100 per cent

2016 pass rate: 100 per cent

Matric learners: 2

Distinctions: 15

University exemption: 100 per cent

Principal Marlene van Heerden’s comment: “Our learners are part of the Schools of Tomorrow programme. They finished some time ago. The pass rate for our school is 80 per cent for all subjects, and if they can’t achieve that they must do it again so they can have a quality education.”
