Fighting in Florida for a fifth time

For the fifth year running Rynfield resident and motocross talent Slade Smith (16) took part in the prestigious Thor Winter Olympics (Mini Os) in Gainesville, Florida in November.

Competing in the highly competitive 125cc class and the schoolboy one class, he had a phenomenal week overall in the supercross and the motocross events with 2 500 competitors from all over the world.

Smith managed some great finishes in his heats on his ABE Midas machine, and had some bad luck in other heats, but managed to qualify straight through to the finals of all his classes immediately, by finishing in the required position to qualify straight through.

He managed a 12th overall in the final of the 125cc class in motocross, out of 104 competitors in a highly competitive class.

The Benoni High School pupil now has his sights set on the MX2 250cc class here in South Africa, leaving the 125 class early.

He could still compete another year in that class, but he has decided to move up and bang bars with the ‘big guys’.

Smith will in March again travel to Florida to compete in the Daytona International Speedway Circuit, where he will compete in the Daytona Amateur Supercross Series.

He will then travel to Texas for the prestigious Freestone Motocross event.
