Sixteen ‘powerful’ Benoni women denounce violence

Sixteen “courageous” and “powerful” women from Benoni have been chosen to denounce violence against women and children.

This is against the backdrop of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign.

The initiative is the brainchild of Nerissa Muthayan, an 18-year-old Lakefield resident.

The youngster said she wanted to do something different to highlight violence against women and children.

“The women featured in this campaign are all courageous and powerful women in Benoni who have made a remarkable contribution to our community,” she said on her Facebook page.

“These ladies have dedicated their lives towards giving back and helping others and they continue to strive towards making a difference and implementing positive change in our community.”

The candidates are invited to a photo shoot and are photographed with a placard which has a message written on it.

Muthayan, a make-up artist, has also done some of the women’s make-up, which depicts blood and harm to their bodies.

The Lakefield resident is part of the Benoni Community Policing Forum’s (CPF) Vulnerable Citizens Support Initiative (VCSI), where she does trauma counselling.

Some of the women who have been identified as part of the 16, are:

• Shirley Venter.

• Jacqueline du Toit.

• Jennifer Mdumisi.

• Mary Goby.

• Retha Teitge.

• Margaret Pappas.

• Gina Fraundarfer.

• Sandra Chetty.

• Tania Forrest-Smith.

• Venotha Pillay.

• Venessa Moodley.

• Manogari Moonsammy.
