Desk opened to help Benoni youth

The Benoni Community Policing Forum (CPF) opened its Youth Desk in October.

The Youth Desk’s chairperson Lorenzo Fasana said the desk is to serve as a platform for the Benoni youth to “know there is always someone to talk to”.

The Youth Desk will use the CPF’s office at the Benoni SAPS.

He also said they will focus on drug abuse and the everyday struggles of the youth.

“When life gets tough don’t resort to drugs or curl up in a bundle,” said Fasana, explaining that teenagers and young adults should know they can speak to the Youth Desk, a teacher or other trusted adults.

Fasana said the police is involved by hosting talks at schools and raising awareness about youth-related crimes.

He said the Youth Desk is designed for youth members to seek counsel and to keep their spirits up.

“We are currently planning after-school activities for youngsters in a little informal settlement towards Springs,” said Fasana.

“We want to get the youth involved with sports and give them that stimulation.”

He also said the CPF Youth Desk is looking for youth members.

“We need people between the ages of 18 and 35 to contribute and who want to help out. It’s fun and you get to do a lot of things you have never done before,” he said.

He said the way forward is to get the initiative stable and sustainable for it to thrive on its own two feet.

He said the CPF teaches one what life is about and said one gets opportunities to better oneself in life.

When asked why he is the best candidate to chair the desk he said: “I have seen how bad it gets and I just want to assist where I can”.

All Benoni youth can get involved by phoning Fasana on 084 084 2895 or you can send a WhatsApp for more information.
