Actonville get elusive win

After a series of defeats in the Eastern Premier League Actonville Spurs Cricket Club’s (ASCC) Premier XI finally achieved a winning result in the 50-over competition.

The team played host to Boksburg outfit CBC Old Boys at Lords Cricket Grounds in Actonville on November 19 and won the match by 50 runs.

CBC has not had it easy in Benoni in the last two weeks. They were thrashed by 155 runs at Benoni Northerns the weekend prior.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first Actonville started shakily with the opening pair of Yusuf Bulbulia and Ahmed Sayeed Salojee dismissed cheaply with the score at 12/2.

Imraan Manack (22 runs from 36 deliveries), CJ van der Walt (26 runs from 28 deliveries) and Clayton August (no runs from five balls) fell with the score at 66/5, leaving ASCC in some trouble.

Young batsmen Matthew Corin (73 runs from 103 deliveries) and Mekyle Pillay (66 runs from 91 balls) patiently went about their business, putting together an important 131-run partnership, before Corin fell with the score at 197/6.

Number nine batsman Justin Brink added a valuable 24 runs from 13 deliveries to steer the host team to a first innings total of 240/7 in their 50 overs.

With the ball, Actonville’s Saahil Khan (3/30 in 10 overs) and van der Walt (3/25 in 10 overs) were the main destroyers, followed by a miserly Manack who bagged figures of 2/7 in nine overs.

CBC were bowled out for 190 runs in 49.1 overs to give ASCC a first win of the 2017/2018 campaign.
