Drop safe bombed at filling station

A drop safe at a petrol station on Snake Road was bombed in the early hours of this morning (November 4).

The incident happened at the Sasol filling station on Snake Road, in MacKenzie Park at about 2.30am.

Maj Gen Poobalan Subbiah, commander of the Ekurhuleni Central Cluster, said several males arrived armed with rifles and handguns.

“They detained the staff and blew open the drop safe,” said Subbiah.

“The owner [of the garage] arrived in response to the alarm followed shortly by the police.”

Subbiah said the owner and police came under gunfire from the robbers.

The men fled with an undisclosed amount of money in a VW Polo which was fitted with false number plates.

A case of business robbery has been opened.
