Battle of El Alamein commemorated

Community members and veterans attended the SA Legion Motorcycle Charter (MC) in Benoni for their sunset parade at Griffiths Court on October 21.

The purpose of the parade was to commemorate soldiers who fell in the battle of El Alamein which was fought in World War Two in 1942.

The battle of El Alamein marked the culmination of the World War Two North African campaign between the British Empire and the German-Italian army.

During the campaign, there were 20 279 South African causalities, 2 104 battle deaths and 3 928 wounded soldiers.
