Police warn against CBD, Northmead robberies

The Benoni police are asking residents who walk in the vicinity of the Northmead Train Station to be vigilant in order to reduce chances of falling victim to street robberies.

Two recent cases involve incidents in Northmead and Voortrekker Street, Benoni CBD.
On October 3 at about 6.30pm, a man who was en route to the train station was robbed of his cellphone on First Avenue, Northmead.
In another incident on October 6 at about 2pm, another man was robbed of his cellphone on Voortrekker Street, while walking to the train station.
Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said in both incidents the two men were robbed by three men with knives.
“The men usually target a person who’s walking alone,” said Sekele.
“They then threaten them with knives.”
Sekele said these areas are known for robberies.
• Voortrekker Street.
• First Avenue.
• Seventh Avenue.
The spokesperson provided the following tips for residents to reduce their chances of falling victim to common robbery:
• Do not have your cellphone in your hand when you walk in the street.
• Always be vigilant and aware of your surroundings.
• If you are attacked, do not resist. Look at the robbers so that you can later identify them.
• Walk in pairs or groups.
