Sam praises local for developing sport

The United Martial Arts International Dojo in Benoni hosted the World Association of Kickboxing Organisation (Wako) Canadian national team recently.

“The Canadians presented an intense seminar to our Benoni kickboxers and it was a terrific opportunity for our kickboxers to meet international kickboxers and world champions,” said shihan Aslam Mahomed, a Lakefield resident and chief instructor of the Benoni Dojo.

The seminar was conducted by Canadian kickboxing team president Muzammal Nawaaz and his student Jeff Blake, who is also a coach.

A total of 15 of the Canadian team mentored the local students.

“Training with these athletes and coaches was astonishing,” said Mahomed.

“The experience that our local kickboxers gained was overwhelming.

“Many high ranking kickboxing instructors attended the seminar including the president of Kickboxing South Africa, shihan Pat Carney and the president of Kickboxing KwaZulu Natal, kancho Allan Mahomed.

Leading kickboxing officials with students from United Martial Arts Benoni and the Wako Canadian team.

“Gideon Sam, president of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) attended the seminar and watched our Benoni kickboxers train at international standards.

“He really enjoyed the seminar and is happy with the development of kickboxing in South Africa,” added Mahomed.

He praised the Benonian instructor for the development of kickboxing and martial arts in South Africa and said he must continue with this great effort of uplifting the youth of South Africa, especially in the rural areas.
