Sizzling cook-off reveals the best hamburger

Maxi’s Northmead Mall hosted the final cook-off between learners from three local schools on August 19.

The competition took place over four months, namely March, May, July and August.

The final was a battle between learners from Benoni High School, Hoërskool Hans Moore and Belvedere School.

The winners were:

• First: Devon Wilson from Benoni High School.

He won an International Hotel School course valued at R20 000.

• Second: Ike Aniayboso from Hoërskool Hans Moore.

He walked away with an International Hotel School course valued at R13 000.

• Third: Belvedere School’s Selina Ngwenya won a R6 000 course from the International Hotel School.

Contestants were given compulsory ingredients that they had to use in the hamburgers they made.

They were also expected to create a second component – either a salad or relish.

“The purpose of the event was to reignite interest in the catering and hospitality industry and to advance the love for food,” said Dasen Sarugaser, one of the judges at the event.

Owner of Northmead Maxi’s, Nico Botha, said throughout the competition a relationship between schools and local business was developed.

Botha said the competition would create more opportunities for learners within the community and expose them to the hospitality industry.
