Brent bunny-hopping to BMX success

Brent Johnson (11) is making his name in the BMX saddle.

The Farrarmere Primary School learner travelled with a host of South African BMX racing specialists and his father Alex to Rockhill, South Carolina to represent the country in the BMX World Championships in July.

Johnson started racing BMX when he was seven years old and is a member of the Kempton Park BMX Club.

He races in the u-11 expert class and competed at races throughout the year including the Gauteng Regional series, national series and club races.

He has won the South African Championships in his class for the past two years as well as winning the African Continental Championship last year.

In South Carolina, Johnson raced against approximately 125 boys in his age group.

The young rider was required to place in the top four in every race to qualify for the next round.

Johnson grabbed a world number five ranking in the Challenge Class Boys’ 11 years after finishing third in the semi-finals and fifth in the final.

He now receives his world number which goes on his bike as number plate W5.

Only two members of the South African team managed to achieve a world number.
