Emergency services dedicate morning to educate learners on safety measures

Care and Share partnered Ithemba Rape and Trauma Support Centre to host a picnic for about 300 disadvantaged learners from Umnyezane Primary school, Crusader Independent School and Norah’s Crèche.

The event was held at the Putfontein Police Station on August 17.

The aim of the event was to educate and build a relationship between children and the police along with fellow emergency service prevention members.

Putfontein SAPS station commander Lieut Col Wellington Mathiane gave a warm welcome to the learners as they entered the premises.

Fire fighters, the EMPD Social Crime Prevention Unit, Putfontein SAPS members and iThemba Support also attended the event.

Vivian Chembeni from the fire department sought to educated the children about what they should do in the event of a fire or other emergencies.

Topics discussed included availability of emergency hotlines; stop, drop and roll movement in the event of a house burning; the dangers of stoves, candles, paraffin and many other dangerous tools.

Pastor Didigene Jacobs greeted the children by saying, “I am here because I love you.”

Jacobs shared his story and informed them about the importance of showing love, care and appreciation for the people around them.

Const Refiloe Mokabane from the EMPD alluded more to the drinking and driving issue, answering cellphones while driving and how to take precautions when walking on pavements.

A demonstration was carried out by Phumla Thembela from Community Safety Forum while Siyabonga Thwala from iThemba Support along with Putfontein SAPS members used SAPS and EMPD vehicles to make children aware of police emergency sirens, blue lights, and the purpose of handcuffs, firearms and bullet-proof vests.

The learners were delighted with the amusing inspirational day. They danced with love and happiness.
