UPDATE: Child (11) injured in Vlei Road accident on her birthday dies the next day

Ncamsile Nhlapho was moments away from buying her 11-year-old daughter a birthday cake and giving her her birthday present.

But before she could, she, her 18-month-old son Zethembe Nhlapho, sister Lungile Ncongwane (22) and her daughter, Hloniphile Nhlapho, were involved in a two-vehicle collision on the corner of Vlei Road and Trumpet Street, in Rynfield.

The City Times reported on the accident on August 11, in which ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said an 11-year-old boy was injured.

Vermaak has since said it was a girl.

He said the 11-year-old girl sustained severe head and chest injuries.

She was airlifted to the Rustenburg Medi Care Private Hospital, but died the following morning. The three other occupants in the same vehicle sustained minor to moderate injuries.

“The driver of the second vehicle was transported privately to a nearby hospital prior to paramedics’ arrival on scene,” said Vermaak.

Speaking to the City Times on August 18, Ncamsile said a motorist driving behind her removed her and her family from the accident, adding that her child hadn’t been ejected from the vehicle.

The Daveyton resident said the four were en route to collect a family member from Boat Lake Village.

From there, they would have gone to the Rynfield Terrace Spar to buy a cake for Hloniphile, as it was her birthday.

The mother said she had purchased her daughter a cellphone and was due to give it to her that night at a birthday celebration at home.

An emotional Ncamsile thanked her family for supporting her and expressed gratitude to the motorists who assisted at the scene of the accident.

She would like to get in touch with the man who removed her and her family from the vehicle.

The funeral will be held at the Phumulani Cemetery on August 19, at 9am.

The EMPD could not confirm the latest development or the status of the investigation at the time of publishing.
