Daveyton man dies after substance poured over him

Police are investigating a case of murder after Daveyton residents allegedly burnt a man who was believed to be involved in an attempted hijacking.

The incident occurred on Mabaso Street, on August 12 at 10pm.

The 30-year-old was admitted to the Far East Rand Hospital, but died on August 14.

Daveyton SAPS spokesperson Capt Mesh Makole said it is alleged the man and his friend were trying to steal a construction vehicle and members of the community caught them in the act.

“The two men and some of the community members got involved in a quarrel,” said Makole.

“One of the men then had an unknown substance poured over him.”

He sustained multiple burns but his friend survived.

Makole added that they are pleading with the community not to take the law into their own hands.

No arrests have been made.
