Six arrested near Golden Drive

Six men were arrested for illegal mining in Benoni today (August 14).

The EMPD’s Tracing and First Response units raided an area near Golden Drive, where they also seized various items used in illegal mining.

“Equipment used in illegal mining and more than 100 explosives with detonators were confiscated,” said Kobeli Mokheseng, the EMPD’s media liaison officer.

“Six male suspects between the ages of 23 and 30, who were preparing to go underground, were cornered and arrested before performing the unlawful activity.”

While on scene, law enforcement officials received a tip-off about explosives in a nearby shack.

“The specialised units responded promptly, before the SAPS members from the Benoni Explosives Unit were summoned,” Mokheseng added.

The men are due to be charged with illegal mining and are expect to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court soon.
